In all these years of my life, the places that have truly nourished my growth are my hometown Changsha, Taipei, and Kyoto — and now Mitaka in Tokyo, where I have recently moved.

我诞生在桐木那座被山包围的小镇里。四岁前住在爸爸的老家，跟着爷爷奶奶在水库边看水面波光、捉小鱼追蜻蜓，到山里砍柴、摘野菜、祭祖扫墓，屋后是茶叶竹林，前坪是橘子香椿，珍宝阁般的菜地里种的最多的都是我喜欢的菜。
“You happened to be born in a land of water and trees—even its very name seems as if fate had marked it so.”
「あなたが生まれた場所は、水と木に満ちた土地であり、その地名すらも運命に刻まれた印のようだ。」
I was born in Tongmu, Changsha, a small town ringed by mountains. Until I was four, I lived in my father’s old home, by a reservoir, with my grandparents. We watched light dance on the water, caught small fish, chased dragonflies, gathered firewood in the hills, picked wild greens, and swept ancestral graves. Behind the house stretched tea fields and bamboo groves; in front, the fragrance of orange trees and spring shoots. The vegetable garden was like a treasure chest, overflowing with the foods I loved most.
私は桐木という山に囲まれた小さな町で生まれた。四歳までは父の実家に暮らし、祖父母とともに貯水池のほとりで水面のきらめきを眺め、小魚を捕まえ、トンボを追い、山に入って薪を割り、野草を摘み、先祖を祀り墓を掃いた。家の裏には茶畑と竹林があり、庭先にはミカンやタラの芽が香っていた。畑はまるで宝箱のようで、私の好きな野菜があふれていた。

Later, my parents brought me to live with them. Soon, we moved to our present home, with farmland just across the road and mountains fading into the distance. Behind the house was another small plot, and a river whose waters rose and fell with the seasons. In summer, I waded barefoot along its gravel banks, lifting stones, peering into what lay beneath. The gardens, as in my hometown, stretched together with the neighbors’, and within them there was always a pond — clear, mysterious.
その後、両親に連れられて戻り、やがて現在の家に移った。目の前には田畑が広がり、その先には山並みが続いていた。家の裏には小さな畑があり、四季ごとに水量の変わる川が流れていた。夏には河原に降りて水に足を浸し、石をめくって探検した。畑は実家と同じように隣家とつながり、その中にはいつも澄んで神秘的な小さな池があった。

As a child, I loved hide-and-seek. Once, I hid inside a cupboard, fell asleep, and my grandparents roused the whole village to search the hills for me. Later, I liked to lie beneath the dining table, the chairs forming a cool little bed. Again, I fell asleep, and my parents searched the house from front to back. I often remembered how staring into the pond set my imagination adrift. Like Alice drifting into dreams, I felt that beneath its surface lay my own dazzling wonderland. And one day, I dreamed it: a fairy rose from the pond in our garden, her wet hair tangled with waterweed, leaves, and flowers, and she came toward me. Years later, when I saw Millais’s painting, I was struck speechless, uncertain what kind of world this truly was.
子どもの頃はかくれんぼが大好きだった。戸棚に隠れて眠ってしまい、祖父母が村中を動員して山中を探したこともあった。食卓の下に椅子を並べて涼しい小さなベッドを作り、そこで眠ってしまい、両親が家じゅうを探し回ったこともあった。池を見つめていると、想像がどこまでも広がった。アリスのようにまどろみながら、その水の下には私だけの色鮮やかな楽園があると信じていた。ある日、本当に夢を見た。実家の畑の池から妖精が現れ、濡れた髪には水草や葉や花が絡まりながら、私に向かって歩いてきたのだ。その後、ミレイの絵を見たとき、私は言葉を失い、この世界がどのようなものなのか分からなくなった。

后来爸爸妈妈把我带回身旁，很快就从学校搬到现在的家，对面是农田，更远处是绵延的山峦，屋后也有一片自己的小菜地，一条四季水量变化明显的河流，到了夏天就下到露出的河滩上去淌水，翻开石头探来探去。菜地也是和老家一样和邻居家的连成一大片，菜地里总有那样的一湾潭水，清澈神秘。

小时候酷爱捉迷藏，曾躲到柜子里，结果睡着了让爷爷奶奶动员全村漫山遍野地找，后来又喜欢躺在餐桌下面，椅子拼成我的小床凉凉的，又睡着了让爸爸妈妈屋前屋后找。我便总会想起盯着潭水就会有的想象，打着爱丽丝的盹，潭水下是我缤纷绚丽的仙境桃源。结果某天真的做了一个梦，梦见一个仙女从老家菜地的水潭里钻出来，湿漉漉的发丝里还夹着水草、叶子、花朵，向我迎面走来。所以当我后来看到米莱斯那副画时骤然失语，不知道这个世界到底是属于什么。

后来我明白，正是因为我诞生在这样的地方，所以才会遇见树木、流水，才会选择亲近与之伴生的一切。我知道我的意念不仅仅是生发于我私自的个体的内心，而可能是这片土地，在我还未诞生的时候，就将我包裹了起来。它想要借我的生命去了解生长在它之上的这些森林、河流、天空、泥土、花草蔬果、虫鸟鱼虾。然后现在，我带着它赋予给我的能量，在遥远的另一片土地，感应到同样柔润的流动、滋养、发芽。

Then I realize, because I was born in such a place, I met trees and flowing water; and because of them, I chose to stay close to all that lives alongside. I know my thoughts are not only my own — perhaps even before I was born, this land had already enfolded me. It wanted to borrow my life to know the forests, rivers, skies, soil, flowers, fruits, insects, birds, fish, and shrimp that grow upon it. And now, carrying the energy it gave me, I find myself on distant soil, sensing the same tender flowing, the same nourishment, the same quickening of life.
このような場所に生まれたからこそ、木々や水の流れに出会い、それと共に生きるものに近づこうとした。私の思いは単なる個人的な心の働きではない。おそらく生まれる前から、この土地が私を包み込んでいたのだろう。土地は、私の命を通して、自らの上に育つ森や川や空や土や草花、果実、虫や鳥、魚やエビを知ろうとしているのだ。そして今、土地から授かった力を抱きながら、遠い別の場所にあっても、同じようにやわらかな流れ、養い、芽吹きを感じている。

在秋天打柿子，缩着手脚爬上树桠，
眺望云雾里远处那些山，正在雾气中
磅礴。我的身躯无限壮大，蓬勃而出，
向潮湿的寒冷伸出臂膀，正在升起，
我无限的躯体，照耀金红的果实。
雨从空无中降落，清洗积年的尘土。
十七个人，在秋天打柿子，挥动
铁灰色胳膊，长臂竹竿敲响无声的
节奏，果实落在我无限空旷的躯体。

秋、柿を打つ

秋、柿を打つ、手足を縮めて枝に登り、
霞みがかった遠くの山々を眺める、霧の中で
巍然と聳える。私の体は限りなく膨らみ、湧き上がり、
湿った寒さに向かって腕を伸ばし、昇っていく、
私の無限の体は、金赤い実を照らす。

雨は虚無から降り、積もった塵を洗い流す。
十七人、秋に柿を打つ、
鉄灰色の腕を振り、長い竹竿で無音の
リズムを刻み、果実はこの無限に茫漠たるわが身に落ちた。

“Picking Persimmons in Autumn”

In autumn, picking persimmons, I climb the branches with my limbs curled.
From the mist, distant mountains rise, shrouded in clouds,
majestic. My body stretches vast and boundless, bursting outward,
arms reaching into the damp cold, rising—
my boundless body, to bathe the golden-red fruits in light.

Rain falls from an empty sky, cleansing years of accumulated dust.
Seventeen of them, who pick persimmons in autumn, swinging—
their iron-gray arms, long bamboo poles striking
a silent rhythm, the fruits falling onto my boundless vast body.
